First graders watched videos on how professionals create storyboards and stop motion videos. Then they gave it a shot using ipads, legos, and a stop motion app. They then added music and titles.

Using digital microscopes in the STEAMworks lab students first drew what they saw with their eyes, then wrote what part they were looking at (seed, stem, leaf, root, flower) then drew what they saw under the microscope. This year the 4th graders have been learning coding using Code.org's coding program. In February they started learning about angles. Using Probots that we purchased with our steamworks lab the students were able to program the car robots to travel along lines very similar to the lessons they did in code.org. They loved it! In the picture above the man has to move forward, then rotate left 120 degrees. That means the student has to know the triangle has an angle of 60 then 180-60=120. They have to know the guy needs to turn left 120 degrees. It's hard to look at the screen figure out the character's left and right and calculate the angles to rotate when not starting at a horizontal or vertical position. That's why these robots would allow them to act it out and physically see how the guy (car) moves. Check out this video!
Poly Education donated the hydroponic plant system after demonstrating it at SXSWedu! It will allow the students to grow plants from seeds and have full plants within 6 weeks! We can't wait to get growing! It will live in the STEAMworks lab so come by and see it! Thank you Poly Education!
The 4th graders are learning about film production using a green screen. We've filmed all our clips and then after Spring Break they will use IMovie to do their final edits. The subject is Texas explorers. Can't wait to see them! They will be on display at the Art Extravaganza in May and perhaps in the hallways (QR Codes in April) A SAMPLE FINAL PRODUCT:
CLICK HERE The 3rd graders were in the STEAMworks lab during February. 2 classes did legos while the other classes learned about spreadsheets in the computer lab. Third graders were able to choose any of the models to build and program. Here are the pictures and videos. The creations they made in motion!The second graders were in the STEAMworks lab during January doing WeDo Lego robotics. They could make a kicking leg, a goal keeper, or cheerleaders. They loved it and here are some pictures and videos. Our night began by a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the new library remodel. From the pictures below you can see how excited the students were to get in and see! Following that were many science and math based activities around campus. Click on the photos below to see them in full size. More coming soon! February 2nd is our annual Science Fair/STEAM night. This year it will be from 5:30-7. At 5:30 we will have a ribbon cutting event to reopen our newly expanded library! A couple STEAM activities will be there for people to enjoy as well as take a look at the beautiful addition. In the gym you will see 3rd grade inventions, 4th grade science fair projects and 5th grade multi-media presentations. On the bulletin boards you will see all the grades showing things they have done in the STEAMworks lab or in the classrooms. 2nd grade invented Toys. Both the 3rd grade and 2nd grade projects have QR codes which means with your smartphone and earbuds you can hear the student talking in a video about their invention or their toy design.
