All 5th graders have a Chromebook assigned to them that they use throughout the day. Because of that Ms. Jarriel now comes to them for computer lab (most of the time). For over a month they have been learning how to program in Scratch which is a block based program with Java code underneath. On stage 3 of the lesson they created a Pong-like game. Then they connected a Makey Makey device to it. Makey Makey is a device that you can hook up to your program that then acts like a controller. In the picture below a student hooked up a banana that turned into a left arrow. So when he pressed the banana, the mouse on the screen went left. It goes with the coding that we are working on but also the electricity unit the students have been studying. It's basically a circuit and it only become closed when you hold the ground clip(his right hand) and you use something conductive as a switch! More examples to come at STEAM night!
